Showaround Locals in Tallinn: Meet Yulya

Showaround Locals in Tallinn: Meet Yulya

Background: Travelling and dancing are my true passions. Friends tend to pinpoint my sense of humour topped up with my everlasting high-energy. I like to make everyone's day a bit brighter. Originally I'm from Ukraine, but I moved to Tallinn years ago. I love this city because it has managed to preserve its history and monuments well, which are combined with modern buildings to create an eclectic architectural environment. Also, Estonia and Tallinn, in particular, are all about tech, startups, and progressing society as a whole.

Showaround: Why did you decide to become a Showaround Local?
Yulya: Because it’s an unbeatable opportunity to connect with people from all over the world. I’m also obsessed with travelling, but I like to do it differently. Without doing any research on the Internet, I learn about a place through the people I meet once I get there. So I decided to give back and introduce visitors to my city, Tallinn, and become a Showaround local.

Showaround: Name three super local things to do in the city?
Yulya: 1. Finnish saunas are a must-try, almost every local has one at home. 2. Go to any matka rada for a stroll through nature. This road is nearly 30 kilometres and is surrounded by lakes and swamps. 3. Have a drink or three at the famous Bermuda Triangle.

Showaround: Favourite restaurant?
Yulya: Every year you can find more and more world-class restaurants opening up in Tallinn, but without hesitation, my favourite one is Kohvik Komeet. Their menu has plenty to choose from including avocado carpaccio, morning blini and various cakes that are edible works of art.

Showaround: What about the nightlife?
Yulya: Tallinn’s nightlife is lively all year round, with quite a few events to choose from every weekend. It’s not a secret that I love dancing and Cubanita, a Cuban-themed bar and lounge, is my go-to place, as well as bars like Popular and Labor which are great options for any Saturday night.

Showaround: How would you describe the local people of Tallinn?
Yulya: Most Estonians are blonde with blue eyes, so it doesn’t help me to completely blend in, but oh well. In their social circles, Estonians are easy going and plain speaking. They often come across as a reserved bunch, who are always ready to offer help for those in need. Some say if you have an Estonian friend, it’s a friend for life - I like to believe that.
