Get to Know Showaround Locals in Siglufjörður: Meet Hrafnhildur

Background: Hrafnhildur is a true local, born and raised in Siglufjörður, where she’s currently working at Sigló Hotel and studying event management. Whether you’re up for a hike through forests, exploring the extraordinary landscape of Iceland, or trying the country’s finest cuisine, the local insight you get with Showarounder Hrafnhildur will not only enrich your cultural experience but also help you plan your trip. Oh, and in case you’re wondering what her name means, she has an explanation for it. The first part Hrafn means a raven and Hildur means a woman warrior, so together it makes 'raven woman warrior' or in other words, Hrafnhildur.

Showaround: Why did you decide to become a Showaround Local?
Hrafnhildur: Because I love meeting new people and this looks like the perfect opportunity to spread the word about Siglufjörður and present my hometown in all its glory.

Showaround: Name three super local things to do in the city?
Hrafnhildur: Three of my favourite things to do here are: going to the mountains to ski or snowboard because skiing here is all about spectacular scenery and uncrowded slopes, taking a walk in the forest (it’s a hiker’s paradise!), or simply having some drinks with friends. You might be surprised, but there are some top notch local bars down here.

Showaround: Favourite restaurant?
Hrafnhildur: Unequivocally my favourite spot in the entire world is restaurant Sunna, conveniently located at the same hotel where I work. The seafood there is superb; you can find everything from a selection of shrimps and birch smoked salmon to Icelandic cod and plenty more.

Showaround: Favourite bar?
Hrafnhildur: Again, I’d suggest heading to Sigló Hotel for some world-class cocktails, the elegant interior, and soothing atmosphere.

Showaround: What about the nightlife?
Hrafnhildur: Frankly, there isn’t that much nightlife outside of the weekend but every Friday and Saturday night, Siglufjörður comes alive. My advice would be to keep an eye on weekly events and concerts in particular. You can always get in touch with me for some advice, though!

Showaround: How would you describe the local people of Siglufjörður?
Hrafnhildur: The local people of Siglufjörður are some of the nicest people you will ever meet. As the saying goes, actions speak louder than words, so let me give you an example to prove this. Last year there was a man who was going to Laugavegur, which is located in the centre of Reykjavík, but he typed Laugarvegur incorrectly into his GPS. The latter bearing an extra letter 'r', and ended up in Siglufjörður. When he arrived, the locals told him he was in the wrong spot; they helped him book a hotel room and made him feel welcomed.

Showaround: Thank you Hrafnhildur for your answers!
