Get to Know Showaround Locals in Mexico City: Meet Helena

Background: Helena is a physiotherapy student with an immense passion for photography, books and science. That’s why you might bump into her at any of Mexico City’s museums, concerts or famous archaeological spots holding a camera. Helena worked as an ice-skating coach for 4 years, and now she is working as a community manager and photographer for an electronic music promoter in the city.

Showaround: Why did you decide to become a Showaround local?
Helena: I decided to become a Showaround Local because I would like to change the way some people think about my country, by showing them there’s more to Mexico than the things they say on the news.

Showaround: What would a perfect day in Mexico City be like for you?
Helena: A perfect day would include a morning run in the Chapultepec forest, followed by an ice-cream in La Condesa. Next, to visit some of the museums located downtown and then a relaxing break with some taco. Afterwards, a quick shower before heading to watch the sunset at either the top of the Latin American Tower, or at El Mirador, located in the suburbs of the city. Then lastly, to go to Zona Rosa for some drinks.

Showaround: What’s your favourite traditional dish?
Helena: Enchiladas will always be one of my favourites and I know how to cook them perfectly too! Chicken inside a tortilla roll with some salsa on top – it doesn’t get better than that!

Showaround: The best way to get around?
Helena: Walking is the best way because you get a chance to appreciate every detail of the city – skating or cycling are also good ways too. Due to the size of the city, when travelling by car you can find yourself stuck in traffic for hours during the week.

Showaround: Most important phrases to know in your language?
Helena: 'No hablo español', 'Cómo llego a_______' and '¿Cuánto es?'

Showaround: How would you describe the local people of Mexico?
Helena: We are easy going, and we like things to be done quickly and efficiently. If we can, we will always try to help and support others – Mexicans have a strong connection between friends and family members in particular. One thing to remember, we are noisy and we really like to laugh.
